All about Arsenal Football Club

Game over or just a blip

Losing to Sunderland was a little surprising, losing to Chelsea at the Emirates is getting too damn close to being a habit. Of course it means that we now have to beat them at Stamford Bridge for the plot to play out like last season.

What are the chances? Well frankly who the heck knows. If you want to be Nostradamus then go ahead, but this team is playing with my mind big time. It is astonishingly clear that we have talent in abundance, despite some of the predictable "X is not good enough to play for Arsenal" and should be shot/sold/rendered into glue (delete where applicable) being published. What I do agree with is that we seemingly have a bunch of Mini Me's with not a lot to differentiate them. I have not been of the opinion that this is necessarily a problem. But having seen us being well beaten at home for the second season running, it is abundantly clear that what we don't have is the beating of Chelsea, at least not without a big guy making a pest of himself up front to take the pressure off the midfield.

You could argue, and Drogba himself is quoted as saying, that the first goal was fortunate to have found the net, it could have gone virtually anywhere. However if you attack the ball and give it a go, then if you're in form like he is, you'll at least have a chance of scoring. Whether Arsene is right in that Drogba didn't do much else but score (not that I personally see that as a problem, mind), if you ain't there, you definitely won't score. Maybe something we might point out to our attackers. Were we denied an honest goal? Six of one, half dozen of the other really. If it had been up the other end I would have been incensed and ready to write to my Member of Parliament at the unfairness had it been given.

So let's try for some mitigating factors. The second goal, like the first, could have gone anywhere, Vermaelen did well to keep it down. Unfortunately. What other excuses can we drag up? Well a lot of our players are coming back from longish lay offs or serious injury and clearly were not at the races in terms of match fitness or alertness. We may have talent in depth, but in certain combinations it doesn't seem to have the capability to score goals. Taking Sunday as an example, Eduardo looked like his confidence is shot and badly needs to get a goal or two. Vela, though immensely talented, is too lightweight as he doesn't have the experience yet to counteract his lack of size. Arshavin is just Arshavin. Even if he wasn't in the deepest of despair right now, he tends to be brilliant in bite-sized chunks. Theo needs some more minutes under his belt and start to be either played in the centre or else Arsene needs to stop touting him as a central attacker.

As I mentioned last post, none of these players are used to the current formation and will need to play in it for a while to get used to it. Which kinda gives us a problem if we continue with 4-3-3. If we can't push an attacker up field more, there won't be enough room in the midfield for Cesc to be magical and get forward himself. That I think is the value of RvP as much as anything else. The opposition defence were always looking to see what he was doing, particularly as he had began to get more clinical and tended not to take up as advanced positions as they might with say Eduardo. Eduardo can be clinical, but tends to need to be a lot closer to the goal to cause problems. He can also be dictated to by the opposition defence, whereas RvP isn't. Had Bendtner been available, then he would have created the same tension in their defenders, but he wasn't, so he didn't.

Is our season over? Only in the minds of the glummest of Gooners and the 'told you so' pundits. I'm not sure I can make a realistic case for us to win the Premiership that I can believe in myself, but the season is about more than that and cup competitions offer the one-off performance that we can do. It's the consistency we can't. But I'm glad to see that the players are at least saying they are well upset and have to play better. Let's hope words are converted to actions, and soon.

When will people get it into their thick heads there will ALWAYS be injuries. When Bendtner, Van Persie and Diaby are missing everyone says we lost cos of them. When Rosicky and Eduardo was missing, we lost cos of them. If Gallas and Fabregas were missing, we lost cos of them. It's just feeble excuses. The fact is. Arsenal were lousy last season and Wenger promised it would be a hell of al ot better. Told us to trust him. Told he had money. We KNOW he had money. He had money before he even made £40m from selling Toure and Adebayor. So the money excuse goes right out the door now. Now it's all about Wenger, his philosophy. And i'm afraid, it's fucked. His philosophy is not working and it will never work. Either he fesses up and jacks it in, and stops wasting everybody's time, or he should leave. I honestly believe another manager could do a lot lot better tactically with the same players at their disposal, and would probably buy the right ones to immediately take us to the next level as well. Wenger has taken us as far as he can. I'd love him to have more success, but I'm not waiting another summer to find out if his silly youth project is going to work. I don't care about beautiful football anymore, it's an old story.

I agree completely, James. I feel like I have been utterly duped into believing this team was different, despite the latest wave of injuries that - as you point out - always happens. After a collosal beat down from Chelsea at home with everything to play for, the rest of the season feels like a big waste of time. No way the team I saw on Sunday has any chance of advancing far into the FA Cup or the Champions League, much less clawing back 11 points to the top of the Premier League.

Furgedaboudit. No Champions League this season means the end of Arsenal. Fairweather fans deserting in droves. Half empty stadium. No new signings. Financial crisis. The end.

Watching the gunners beaten by Chelsea was as painful as a toothache and in the cold of Hong Kong.
As some of us have said,AW has taken the gunners as far as he can/could. The root of the problem is the so called beautiful soccer with endless passing.
Allied to his project youth it is stfling the gunners.
Ptoblem areas have been identified yet AW still trusts these players.I refer to Alumunia. How many time has he been responsible for goals scored by the opposition.
I'm afraid that AW wants to show the rest of the soccer world that when his project y takes off he would dominate the english football landscape and of course Europe. That is as likely to happen as I will will be next man to land on the moon.
He has been pleading for time and his excuse that his kids will finally deliver is beginning to be a a bit absurd. How many times have we heard it before?
If he wants to go to RM let him go.After managing a mediocre record there in less than ten matches he would be shown the door.
I hope he reads the feedback from the fans and realizes his passing philosophy is taking the gunners nowhere and immediate remedial action taken before the gunners slid out of qualification for the cl

You're too kind. I agree with James and so do most of the Arsenal fans I know. Groundhog Day has come round once too often. And guess what we'll throw away the chance of a trophy tomorrow by fielding a weakended team against Manchester City who will be at full strength. Yet again. Anyone who thinks this team will win the Champions League or Premier League is seriously deluded. I read last weekend one Wenger loyalist even blamed the rain for the Chelsea defeat!! How can you believe anything the loyalists say when they blame the rain for our defeats! Cretins. They all love Denilson too, who is a QPR player at best, nowhere near good enough to play for our magnificent club. We are being shafted left right and centre when this plank is on the pitch and anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't know a damn thing about football, I'm telling you now. The most most urgent matter at Arsenal at the moment is that we have the worst keeper in the Premier League. Can you imagine that? Arsenal, the third richest football club in the world and the sixth richest sports club in the world, have the worst keeper around! If Wenger doesn't realise how bad Almunia really he is, he shouldn't be anywhere near managing Arsenal any more. And I don't see any keepers being linked with us do you? I'm totally embarrassed being an Arsenal fan with this clown in goal.

Enjoyed reading the comments just posted, and the fall out from all of us devastated Gunners. This defeat was the worst since last seasons CL second leg semi final versus MU. Its had the same effect, we left that game feeling like we were totally outclassed. The same feeling is there again after Sunday. AW said after the first leg against MU last season 'you will see a different Arsenal next game'. He was on the mark, Arsenal were blown away after 9 minutes.
The article here pointed out that Chelsea and Man Utd raise their intensity on big games. Arsenal do not seem to be able to do that, they coast along playing at a good level and then they get hit by a freight train like the one that rolled through on Sunday!
Eduardo's confidence is in tatters, he has not scored a league goal in months and they need to pick him up, fast. Big problem is the defensive intensity at midfield. Arsenal were undone down the right flank in a 5 minute spell when the midfield did not close down the Chelsea attack. Ashley Cole was left alone down the right and he cashed in big time. Wenger made a bad decision to leave Walcott out. His pace and trickery would have kept Cole on the back foot and he might have been more concerned about his own defense than he turned out to be. Instead he was free to come in behind the Chelsea attack and support it down the right flank. Anelka fed him perfectly for the second one. Remember!
I agree with the consensus. Wenger is deluding himself and has become too attached to this group of players he is simply not tough enough on them.
