All about Arsenal Football Club

Not the end of the world, just feels like it

I try and maintain a sense of perspective when it comes to football, it is after all a game. Trouble is, when it comes to the Arsenal, all sense flees. This is not going to be a reasoned post, this comes from the heart. You have been warned.

I have been quiet today. I was the most quiet, for the longest time, after losing the CL final. I don't rage, I don't call for Arsène to be sacked, I am just quiet. It's not a nice quiet, it's an empty sort of quiet. It's about being deeply disappointed with your team. A team you know are a good team, a team you told everyone who would listen, and some who didn't particularly want to, were a good team who would win stuff this season. And then they go and play crap. So I have been quiet today.

Truth is that United out-Arsenaled Arsenal. Anyone remember when the worst thing you could do against Arsenal was to win a corner? Because if you lost the ball we would be down the other end with the ball in the back of the net before you could say 'we oughta get back boys'. That's what we used to do. Now we put Stuart Little up front (thanks Alan), a player who rarely manages to concentrate for more than a quarter of the game and expect him to out jump whatever non vertically-challenged player is put in his way. Not really a great shock he didn't win too many headers. Having said that, neither does the mythical RvP to be fair. He just looks like he might be able to. I know it's not about headers really, it's about presence. Arshavin is dangerous running at defenders, if he's leading the line he needs to not run at defenders until other players catch up with him. Or he scores on his own. Unfortunately he managed to do neither.

I digress. Arsène has already said we didn't play too well. Hard to disagree. What was amazing is that so many players didn't play well. Some were more culpable than others and we all know who they were, but it felt like they hadn't gotten over last years 1-3 or the loss at Old Trafford. I couldn't help but think they figured if they could hold on to the coat tails of United. They might get something out of it if they could just hold on. It's sad that we can't seem to have a team with the self belief of United. Is that down to the manager or players? Don't know, but the manager was badly let down by the players yesterday whatever you think of their relative ability levels. Like many I think Arsène having said he would, should have brought some sort of a striker in during the window. A loan would not have caused his fledgling superstars to commit hari-kari, but after yesterday the idea that we could not improve on what we have looked more than faintly laughable. Just about anyone could have improved our goal threat. I wish he would say nothing rather than say something and do nothing. It doesn't exactly build trust.

My rational side says that we could still be building something, after all how many Gooners now recognise that Arsène was right about Song and to a lesser extent maybe Diaby. He could therefore be right about Denilson and Almunia. No really. Trouble is the footy fan in me wants to win something to show the world that actually they do need to take notice of the mighty Arsenal.

I happen to think that calling for Arsène's sacking is total errant nonsense. Not even worth arguing against. The Prem is far from decided and a win next weekend would stir things up a bit. Not sure I believe it's possible, so Arsène is going to have to dig out all the 'mental strength' this team possess this week. If he manages it, I'll be cheering with the best of them. But for now, I am just being quiet.

Good piece. I go quiet too.
My girlfriend hates when arsenal lose because i retreat into my shell and dont speak to anyone for two days. Yesterday was even more disappointing for me because i've recently emigrated to Canada and pretty much convinced/forced all my new friends here into becoming arsenal fans with tales of our kids that could stand up to the bought success at united and chelsea. boy do i feel like a mug after the last 4 games against united and chelsea. That was men against boys again, they bottled it again, wenger blew it tactically and it was heart-breaking to watch.
Football has a way surprising you when you don't expect it, lets hope thats the case this weekend

I'm afraid the situation is worse than merely a youthful team with a trio of awful players who cock up every week. Sadly a lot of it is down to Wenger' clueless tactics. I mean, this guy really is utterly clueless. You said it yourself, a team that trashed us on the counter-attack in the CL, so how do you stop that happening again? How about leaving a centre back in defence. Just one tiny tactical change that could prevent two goals going in. Who told Almunia it's a good idea to kill long balls upfield to midgets? Who told Sagna to cross balls when there's never more than 2 players in the box? Why isn't Clichy instructed to close down crosses? Why don't the team work hard to win the ball back when they lose possession? How can a team be so bad at defending set pieces for 4 years? There's a dozen fuck ups that stop us winning football matches, or even competing with ther best, because of Wenger and his moronic tactics. He just sends teams out and says "play". If they have a good day they win, a bad day and they have no chance because there are no tactics to keep the game tight. He used to build teams that would steamroll anyone, no tactics were required. But in the CL you have to be cleverer than that, which is why Wenger has never won it. But now he's trying to build a youthful team, with no tactics, he hasn't a chance.

I'm not going along with you all the way, but certainly our naiveté at times is breath-taking. It's as if the team are surprised when the opposition have the afront to not do what they expected. As you suggest, just 'playing' isn't good enough when the pretty triangles aren't resulting in goals.

This is becoming a bit like the movie groundhog day. I can remember not too long ago Arsenal could hold their own against the supposed top three teams, but it becoming a distant memory. Both MUFC and Chelsea blew past Arsenal as if there were not there. It was terrible defending and the game was over at half-time. Park's goal just rubbed salt in the wound, and but for some luck it could have been 4 or 5. I don't recollect Edwin Van der Sar having to make a single save and it was as if Arsenal had forgotten how to pass and shoot. As for the long ball crosses into the box to the invisible Arsenal striker, don't even get me started!

Chelsea next Saturday away could be a chance for some redemption, but forgive me for being slightly less than optimistic about coming away from the 'Bridge' with all three points.

Time to wake up again and repeat the same dizzying escapade which is rapidly becoming the Arsenal mantra.

Oh for the days of Vierra, Pires, Bergkamp and TH 14 and the English back four, when we would run down and score after the opposition got a corner.

Come on Arsene, it is all well and good to play lots of nice passes but win the CL?? Are you having a larf??? We should perhaps try for the FA Cup next year. Start out small, walk before you can run.

I know we could be accused of lacking ambition, but I'm with you on the let's make sure we can walk before we run and go for the F-All Cup. By all means try and go for the CL an' all, but let's get something other than the Emirates Cup in the Emirates trophy cabinet.

Wenger needs a proper up and coming quality number 2 by his side. One with a serious view to taking over, can gain the respect of the players and is not afraid to challenge Wenger's decisions when needed. Laurent Blanc
