I've got to be honest, when we went one nil down I thought Bolton of all teams were going to end our unbeaten home run. That would be as bad as Manu or the Chavs doing it. And I think the root of our problem with Bolton is it's all in the mind. We have been told so many times that they are our bogey team that with some good results going their way they have become our bogey team. Actually we are one ahead in wins overall and it's currently one all for the last three FA Cup games, but hey why let the truth get in the way. I have no time for the apologists moaning about whether they kick us off the pitch, for crying out loud we know what to expect from them, they will try and stop us from playing. Whatever else Fat Sam is, he is not completely stupid. He knows if they try and match our passing game, we will slaughter them. So they stop our passing game by crowding out Cesc.
With so much effort being put in they were going to tire and we were going to have several chances late on, but Jaaskelainen, a pretty decent goalie at the best of times, had another of his good games against us. Add some dogged and sometimes last-ditch defending and wide midfield not cutting infield enough, and by the time King Kolo scored, it was all a bit of a relief. I think the replay is going to come too soon for Hleb, who depending on which Hleb had turned up, could have given us the alternative route we needed so badly. If we couldn't go through Cesc, then we went route one. Bolton's defence know how to deal with high balls even if we don't.
It was a kinda out of sorts performance over all, in part due to our attitude seemingly not being right, but in all honesty also due to the fact Bolton know how to play us and stuck to the plan. We were just not creative enough to overcome it. Whilst not making excuses, we could have had a pretty decent team made up of the players we couldn't play, and I think the injuries particularly to Hleb and Van Persie probably cost us the win. In passing, I hope Theo scores his first real soon, some of his shooting was looking a little desperate. Once he scores and his confidence returns, I think we will see a much more dangerous player.
Can we win the replay? Of course. But we need to get our minds and tactics right. I had an idea that if we play Denilson and Cesc, they can't block out
both of them. It would mean a return to 4-5-1, but Denilson has already
shown some delightful touches and it might work to throw some doubt in
Fat Sam's mind. OK, heck of a tough place to make you FA Cup debut, but
at the moment they appear to have us sussed.
If we lose to Bolton at the Reebok, it could cost us more than the next round of the FA Cup. We need to get this particular monkey off our back so we get the belief that we can beat anyone on the day. Whilst we have a bogey team, there is always going to be room for doubt. With the CL returning, we can't afford that.
