All about Arsenal Football Club

Does Arsene need a hairdryer?

As per normal, and more examples to come, the media wilfully misquoted Arsene and suddenly the mancs became the 'Untouchables'. My reading of what he said was that their current position was untouchable, but why let semantic niceties get in the way of a tabloid headline? And true to form, we got a knee-jerk disagreement from Fat Sam. I tried, but couldn't think of two managers quite so polar opposite so I guess Fat Sam couldn't help himself. It's inbred, or should that be he's inbred?

Anyways, it got me thinking. Arsene has his own very distinct way of doing things and Fergusmoan has his. But whisper it quietly, which one has won more and has a greater control over his players. Mancs know that if they don't toe the line, they are shipped out, and sharpish. At Arsenal you wonder whether the players don't have a bit too much leeway and on occasion take advantage of it to the detriment of the team. Of course it's nothing like as bad as the chavs, so I guess we can be grateful for that, but is there a possibility that Arsene is too obtuse at times with his comments for some of our gifted but less smart players? I'll leave you to figure out who they may be yourself.... you only have to hope he's a little less refined in private when he has to deal with team discipline.

No doubt like many other Gooners, I had a little dampness in my eye when Eddie took to the pitch last Monday, and I can't remember ever being so pleased when an Arsenal player scored. It felt soooo good to see him playing again, and I know the medical team wouldn't have let him play unless he was ready, but I felt incredibly protective of him whenever he went into a tackle. It's a shame he's now got a small hamstring problem, but it's only to be expected after so long out, and is so far short of the tabloid headlines some websites have been using. It's not a disaster, it's just a little niggle.

I found a lot of the recent rehashing of the original injury rather distasteful, particularly the comments attributed to Taylor. Now I get that he's not the most media-savvy player, but why did he need to say anything? Eduardo made a short comment and then said it's done and finished and isn't worth talking about any more. Now that's class, so if Taylor's apologists are up in arms about his continued vilification, then maybe they should tell their man to keep his mouth shut.

And talking of keeping mouth firmly closed, I read some reports of what Bendtner had said about how good he was and given his apparent arrogance at times, was all set to ship him out in short order. Oh when will I learn? Foreign players being quoted by English journos is not a good mix. Since the original interview was in Danish, I don't think it's all that unlikely that rather than get a Danish speaker to translate, they just pasted the text into the Google translator, and you know how accurate that is. So he has apparently learnt from Cesc that if someone misquotes him in a way that is damaging, he needs to put it right and did so on the club website. To be honest after Monday night's display, he has won me over just a little bit more and I now prefer him to the Ade of this season if he keeps that level up.

What do you do with an enigma like Adebayor? Sublime in parts, terrible at other times, but always last year with a work ethic which won fans over. This year not so much. In fact I'd be inclined to offload him in the summer if we don't see any improvement. He really looked like he was convinced to stay against his instincts, and his instincts are now back in control.

We'll wait and see if Arshavin starts tomorrow, and he will reportedly figure in the game, if he doesn't start I can't see why the same midfield as Monday shouldn't be used. Really anything to not have Eboue play. As others have said, he must be unbelievable in training for Arsene to keep on ignoring the blindingly obvious temperament issues. Surely even Arsene has a limit to how magnanimous he can be?

Taking into account the caveats about not believing all you read, I do hope that Theo's contract extension isn't proving problematic. It would be unforgivable to see him walk, although to be honest I don't expect that to happen, regardless of whether we are playing Champions League next season. And on that point, don't forget we have got to the last match of the season and had to rely on the Spuds messing up, but still qualified before. I'd rather not leave it that late again, so we need to take advantage of our two main rivals playing each other and make sure we get a good win tomorrow. Then a small matter of the Champions League to focus on.
