All about Arsenal Football Club

Has success ruined us?

Just to be clear, by 'Us' I mean Gooners, not the club. So far as I am concerned we can never be too successful and I would dearly love the opportunity to test that particular hypothesis.

Looking back after what has been a deeply disappointing few weeks for the club and therefore Gooners everywhere, the extremes of opinion in our support have virtually gone to war with each other. The 'Arsène Out' brigade berate the 'Arsène Knows Best' contingent for being myopic and the AKB's suggest the AO's should try supporting another football club, or even the Spuds.

Now allowing for the fact that the Internet gives a meeting point for the disaffected in a way unique in the history of our club, just by joining together their voice is louder, more focused. Equally because of the stridency of the disaffected those feeling loyalty is above all considerations are inclined to fight back. My experience is that not surprisingly, the vast majority of Gooners are somewhere in between the two viewpoints.

I understand the frustration of the AO's, although I'm not so worried as the media about the length of time we have gone without silverware. But Gooners used to be renowned for their pragmatism and humour, and in the past have needed both in large measure. Look back at some of the teams we have put out in the past! We need these characteristics again right now so that we can get behind what we have, whilst still being concerned for better in the future. Pragmatically it's all very well to sack the manager or demand high quality players be bought in, that can be done on the Internet. IN the real world it's a little different. Our players shouldn't have to earn our support, they should get it because they play for Arsenal, our team. Somewhere it's got arse about face and an attitude of entitlement has got lodged in Gooners maybe because of the success under Arsène.

I think the current general attitude is that of being fed up with this team not performing consistently to the standard we have all seen them achieve at times. I don't think the blame is entirely on the manager as there has to be stuff going on at the club that we are not privy to. And no, I don't believe that because we support the club we have any divine right to know about all the in's and out's of the management. Where I do have a problem is when it effects the team not achieving and we are given trite excuses that on the face of it don't begin to explain what we see on the pitch.

I am, I have to confess, becoming increasingly annoyed by the statements coming out of Arsenal.com, some from Arsène some from players. There's a lot of talking going on which doesn't seem to make any difference when the players cross the white line and I for one wish it would stop. By all means have opinions, by all means make predictions, but please 'fess up when mistakes are made. Something currently annoying me is Arsène's consistent argument that Fabianski is a great goalie. OK, let's just assume he is on the training pitch. But if he doesn't have the character to perform on the pitch, he's not a great goalie, he's a liability. I'm sure Arsène does believe he has a world beater, but he needs to prove it some other way that doesn't cost us games and possibly titles.

I don't feel that Arsène deserves the sack. Too many conclusions have been drawn from too little evidence that he is stubborn, that his youth project is more important than the club, etc. Oh please. Do you know the man? Have you met him and discussed it with him? I'm guessing not, and therefore these conclusions are based on a personal worldview which may have as little to do with reality as any expectation Greedybayor may have of a warm welcome at the Emirates.

You may well say, and I'd find it hard to disagree, that we should expect a team with aspirations to greatness to not lose a two-nil lead away to relegation contenders. That was, and always will be totally unacceptable, but what it shouldn't do is provoke a 'I told you so' reaction. Does it feel better being right in our own eyes if the club ends up outside of Champions League qualification? No, it feels bad because we have at some point for some reason declared ourselves a Gooner. For good or bad.
