All about Arsenal Football Club

Let's all take a deep breath...

Wow, there's nothing like Double D and Russian money to stir up a hornets nest then! One of the best and worst things about the Internet is that it allows anyone and everyone (even Spuds) to voice their opinion without the annoying necessity for facts. Thus it is with Arsenal Football Club supporters at the moment. I have mixed thoughts on how good this could be, but what I do know is that it's going to take time to figure out and I'm not going to forget what David Dein has done for the club in the past in considering the latest developments.

I'm not going to say that I am 100% behind Double D and what he has done, but lets just suppose he does have Arsenal's best interests at heart, and feels deeply that we need to have a lot more dosh to match the insane spending at other Prem clubs. This is not something which will go away, it's where football is now and to want to stay as we are means we will, not might be out of the reckoning financially. We may not like the new reality, but we have to live with it.

So anyway, how would Dein go about it? Obviously he can't rejoin the present board, they in effect sacked him when they rejected Silent Stan who now seems to have been the more acceptable face of capitalism. Just how many people in the world do you think have the sort of money that is required to match other club investment and are willing to spend it on a football club? Fairly short list I would suggest. I don't really buy the idea that the Russian money is purely for the love of the game, although Usmanov claims to have been an Arsenal fan for eight years, as he himself admits it's a good investment which he'd like to increase. There's a lot of compelling political and financial reasons as well, but what I don't get is the whinging that Double D made £75m 'selling out the club he loved'. How is that a sensible argument? Would it have got a better reaction if he had given away the shares and even football-loving businessmen are still businessmen. If his motives are other than for the good of AFC then wouldn't he have just sold to the highest bidder with no regard for the eventual outcome? Or taken up offers to get involved in other clubs? So no, that doesn't wash and I suggest those who think it's just about a power trip put their brains into gear as it would have been a lot easier at some other club.

Maybe it's not the ideal way to do it, but we get Double D as chairman of Red & White so at least we have someone with history in charge. As for those who think we don't need the money and Arsene wouldn't spend it anyway, do you think Arsenal wouldn't have bid for Torres for instance if they had more money to play with than just gate and merchandise receipts?

If you think Double D has done this in isolation, think about this. What if this is the 'soon' that Arsene was talking about with regards to his contract? And if you're worried about a club with the good of the fans at heart, don't forget who is attempting to trademark the word Gooner.

So there was this footy competition we just got into by a very easy if a tad boring win over Sparta. And we now get a pretty decent draw for the group stages. On the pitch the concerns have to be getting Diaby somewhere close to match fit and teaching Theo to cross accurately when he's not pulling it back. He seems reasonably accurate when wrapping his foot around the ball from near the goal line, but can't seem to do the same if the target is ahead of him. Bit more time on the practise pitch methinks.

Well pleased Eduardo scored and it's the sort of goal he was bought for, many more please! I can quite understand Rosicky not being overly excited about scoring against his boyhood club as it effectively put them out of the competition. Maybe he'll be a bit more up for scoring against their great rivals in the group stages.

No doubt at some point the dust will settle and we may or may not have new owners. Thing to remember is we support Arsenal because we can't not do. Arsenal is in the blood, and whether your blood is boiling with indignation at the moment or not, it's impossible to consider supporting a lesser team. Good luck Gooners.
