No, seriously. We have to put this in context and the context is that an Arsenal team with an average age of 22 ended an fifteen game unbeaten European record in front of one of the most volatile crowds in European football. We should get carried away with what was achieved because it was a great achievement.
It seems invidious to single out any particular players, but since I've given Eboue a hard time in the past, I have to admit he had a good game. So maybe we should forget this play him in midfield thing eh? If giving him the captaincy is what it takes to make Almunia play like that, then maybe we should give him it a little more often. Truth is though, he has been improving and is now perilously close to making Mad Jens eat his own words. Almunia is now a goalie who can win us games.
Of course he had to play a blinder as our makeshift defence was a tad leaky, but let's not condemn the back four as they were in an impossible situation. Only Clichy was a regular and good central defence is built on partnerships. Partnerships take time and with the best will in the world, half a game against Everton doth not a partnership make. So Silvestre and Song were effectively making it up as they went along in a European Champions League game. Let's give them a break huh?
It was interesting to hear the comments about Diaby from the pundits, who have obviously not seen him play before one has to assume. Actually not many Gooners had this season either, but that's another thing entirely. Those who have seen him play and paid attention at the time would know he had quick feet, an appetite for surging runs and a heck of a shot on him. Of course he also had a nasty habit of taking the ball just that bit too far and losing it or making a dodgy pass. Not so much now. He had a great game and around the 70 min mark when Arsene normally makes substitutions and he was tiring I could not have been the only Gooner who thought about bringing Ramsey on. Fortunately he did, and what an appetite for the game the boy has. He doesn't like being tackled and tries very hard to get the ball back and often succeeds. Not one for the future, one for now.
As is Theo, and his goal was beautifully taken. He seems to be increasing effective as the season goes on, just shows what a bit of confidence can do. He seems to believe he is there by right now and our attack is the better for it. With the trickery and surprising strength of Nasri on the left, we really have distant echoes of Freddie and Super Bob. Distant for now, but getting louder.
I suppose I have to bring a little caution into it as well, it is me or does Denilson not like getting near his own penalty area when tracking back? I know he doesn't have great tackling technique, but he seems to let opposition players continue without much of a challenge once they get past him. Other than that I like him as a player, more recently his annoying habit of passing to the opposition has lessened and some of his balls are now Cesc-like in accuracy. A little more consistency and I'll like him even more.
I think if there is one thing that pleased me the most, it was the clinical nature of our finishing. It's something which has been so sadly lacking but to have finished the game with more goals from less shots than the opposition has to be something we haven't done for a long while. If we have learnt to do that consistently, and it's not just a European thing, then we will have enough in our play to scare anybody, and I mean anybody. Of course the return match will be a whole different kettle of fish. They are not going to come to the Emirates and play as openly so chances are it could be a dour affair, but for now we can get carried away.
